WebAllotment to individual Potawatomi in 1890 placed 275,000 acres into the federal domain, and the area was opened to non-Indian settlement in 1891. With more than twenty-five thousand tribe members, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation is the ninth-largest American Indian tribe in the United States. Federal recognition came in 1948.
